CHIESA DEI PAGANI AND BURGUNDIAN GALILEE: WHAT WAS DISCOVERED IN THE 1980S IN FRONT OF THE FACADE OF THE BASILICA OF ST. MARY AND ST. DONATUS ON THE ISLAND OF MURANO?
During excavations carried out in the 1980s in front of the façade of the Basilica of St. Mary and St. Donatus on the island of Murano, a complex of walls dating from earlier than the basilica from 1141, which still stands today, was discovered. Analysis of the relics allowed these walls to be interpreted as a double-dedicated chapel mentioned in sources. It was probably two-storeyed and served as a link between the basilica and the baptistery. The only analogy is a structure called Chiesa dei Pagani in the cathedral complex in Aquileia. According to Carol Heitz’s suggestions, the possibility of inspiration for both complexes should be considered, drawn from the circle of Burgundian monasteries associated with Cluny II or directly from monasteries in northern Italy such as Fruttuaria or Novalesa. A separate issue is the function of the buildings in Laguna, which is related to baptismal liturgy and Christian initiation, which distinguishes them from the Cluniac Galilei, associated primarily with the cult of all saints and prayers for the dead.
