TARNÓW INSPECTORATE OF THE HOME ARMY (HOME ARMY KRAKOW DISTRICT) UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL STEFAN MUSIAŁEK-ŁOWICKI
In the military structure of the Polish Underground State, the Tarnów Inspectorate of the Home Army was part of the Krakow District of the Home Army. It was one of eight district inspectorates (Krakow, Tarnów, Mielec, Nowy Sącz, Nowy Targ, Jasło, Rzeszów, Przemyśl) and included three districts: Brzesko, Dąbrowa Tarnowska and Tarnów (the districts corresponded to powiats (administrative units) according to the administrative division before 1939, and according to the pre-war military division they were part of a single regimental district of the 16th Infantry Regiment of the Tarnów Region). The aim of the article is primarily to present the history, the activities undertaken (mainly in the field of organizational work, sabotage and diversion), as well as selected profi les of persons active in the Tarnów Inspectorate of the Home Army in the period when it was headed by Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Musiałek-Łowicki. He held this position from July 1942 to January 1945. He was well acquainted with the specifi cs of the area, having previously been deputy inspector of that inspectorate. Born in the Russian partitioned territories, he had been involved with the army all his life, and had a great deal of theoretical and practical experience (he was a soldier, took part in battles, including the First World War and the Polish-Soviet War). After taking up the inspector’s post, he strove above all to intensify and coordinate sabotage and diversion actions in individual districts and outposts of the Tarnów Inspectorate, he dealt with staff expansion, improvement of organizational work; he was responsible for carrying out the “II Bridge”, “III Bridge” and “Burza” actions. Lieutenant Colonel S. Musiałek-Łowicki left Tarnów in the spring of 1945.
