“NON OMNIS MORIAR”: HOW TO PRESERVE THE HUMAN TRACE, OR ON SALVATION THROUGH ART (“THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS,” 2004, BY LECH MAJEWSKI)
Lech Majewski is an artist for whom art is a form of reflection on fundamental issues – the mystery of life, transience, and the inevitability of death. His film “The Garden of Earthly Delights” (2004), based on his own novel “Metaphysics” (2002), addresses the problem of preserving the trace of a fading life. The protagonist of the novel and film, Chris, faced with the premature death of his beloved (Bea-Claudia), faces fundamental
questions about the mystery of existence and the need to confront the trauma of loss. His reflection that “an image is more lasting than a body. A trace is more lasting than life” corresponds with Majewski’s conviction that only art saves from oblivion. Similarly, immersion in the symbolic universe of Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych “The Thousand-Year Kingdom” was a way for the characters to outwit the passing of time.
