„THE ORTHODOX SARMATIAN” – AGAINST THE MYTH OF BOHDAN KHMELNYTSKY
The myth of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, formed in pro-Russian circles during the 18th and 20th centuries, became an essential factor in imposing a deformed image of the Cossack wars of the 17th century onto our historical consciousness. The central idea of this myth is the interethnic nature of the Khmelnytsky War and the “reunification” with the Moscow Kingdom as its goal. Joachim Jerlycz’s Latopisiec is a very important factor in disavowing of this myth. It represents the position of the opponents of the Hetman, who had been integrated into the social elites of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, – the “Sarmatian nobility”.
