Streszczenie
NAMES OF DISEASES IN THE ORAVA DIALECT
The article presents and analyses names of diseases found in the Orava dialect. The primary source of the lexical material used in the paper is Józef Kąś’s Słownik gwary orawskiej [‘Dictionary of the Orava Dialect’], supplemented with data obtained from the files of Słownik gwar polskich PAN [‘The PAN Dictionary of Polish Dialects’]. The article discusses the origin of the analysed lexemes and expressions (names adopted from general Polish: native and foreign; names borrowed directly by the Orava dialect, mainly from Slovak; names developed within the Polish dialectal context). The semantic motivations Slavic names are also presented. Names motivated by disease symptoms predominated in the collected material, particularly ones relating to the appearance of lesions and the physical sensations of the patient. Less numerous were names motivated by beliefs about the aetiology, i.e. the causes of the disease.
