Streszczenie
The research purpose of this article is to demonstrate the political and social implications of the Hyǒmnyulsa theater. It went down in history as Korea’s first theater and, just as importantly, a national theater. It operated from 1902 to 1908, thus during an extremely dramatic period when the fate of the country was at stake. The peculiar political situation in which Korea found itself determined the activities of the Hyǒmnyulsa and ignited fierce disputes involving different social groups, especially both supporters of state modernization and conservative officials. This article attempts to describe this dispute and show that it was rooted in political and social grounds.
