Synopsis
“TRUE HERO” IN THE CONTEXT OF JACEK PRZYBYLSKI’S SPEECH ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE VICTORY OF VIENNA
Jacek Idzi Przybylski was one of the speakers during the celebration of the centenary of the relief of Vienna, organized by KEN (Committee for National Education) in October 1783. His statement was enthusiastically received by the audience and also by the King Stanisław August Poniatowski. The speech was, as a sign of recognition, published in print. Przybylski tackles different issues in his speech, but the leitmotif seems to be the theme of a “hero” proposed by the author, bearing the distinctive and meaningful term ‘true’. The article presents a thesis that Przybylski, in the cited speech, uses the structure of the heroic myth, known to European culture since ancient Greece, adapting its elements to the assumptions of the story he told. By processing various motifs of the classical pattern, he builds the image of a hero with cultural and national features, and defines the essence of heroism through the values of the community he represents. By updating these motives in his speech, Przybylski transforms some of the attributes of a hero, enriching them with ideological content that corresponds to the personal model propagated in writings of his times, journalism and educational and educational curricula. Thanks to the above, his hero not only represents the past, but is also rooted in the present.
