Synopsis

A STUDY OF THE MIDDLE PERSIAN TEXT Mādigān-i Yōšt-i Fr(i)yān: A Story of a Youth from the Family of Fr(i)yān

The present book is a result of the author’s research on Mādīgān-ī Yōšt-ī Fr(i)yān (MYF), which belongs to the most interesting texts of the Middle Persion religious writings. The core of the book is a fairly elaborated description of a riddle contest between a righteous youth Yōištī Fr(i)yān and a demonic necromancer Axt. The story recounted in MYF is based on an episode we briefly encounter in an Avestan hymn Yašt 5 where mean Axtya is going to apply the test to a certain Yōištī. While the hymn mentions 99 riddles, however, MYF puts the number of 33. As the text tells us Yōištī Fr(i)yān finally wins over Axt using his opponent’s weapon: riddle. The message of the narrative can be viewed on several levels, most importantly as a macrocosmic struggle of good and evil brought down to a microcosmic scale. Not surprisingly good eventually triumphs over evil since MYF—as any well-tailored folk tale—subscribes to a Zarathustrian and actually universalistic paradigm of the battle between light and darkness.
