THE PORTRAYAL OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN POLISH COMMUNIST PRESS FROM 1945 TO 1956
The monograph constitutes an attempt to reconstruct the image of the Catholic Church based on publications released during the Stalinist era in the pages of the communist flagship newspapers: Robotnik and Trybuna Ludu. The study elucidates the way propaganda disseminators manipulated language to craft a filtered, distorted, schematic, and tendentious portrayal of the Church in the minds of Poles, refracted through the prism of communist ideology. Employing a methodological approach grounded in qualitative and quantitative analysis, the monograph unveils not only the diverse linguistic tools employed as propaganda instruments, but also the usage and patterns of words and word combinations that formed specific semantic fields manipulated by communist journalists. The work substantiates that despite the authorities’ professed interest in cooperation with ecclesiastical hierarchs, the primary aim of the communists was to dismantle the Church institution and supplant it with a new form of religiosity, loyal to the regime, symbolized by the movement of the so-called “patriot priests.”
