Synopsis

The article discusses the contributions of Michał Bobrzyński, a prominent figure in the Krakow school of history, to Polish historiography at the turn of the 20th century. The article portrays Bobrzyński as an influential historian, lawyer, active politician, and organizer of scientific life. The article analyzes his research methodology, which was characterized by rigor and a critical reference to primary sources, especially legal ones, as well as an interdisciplinary approach combining history with law. The central focus is his most famous work, Dzieje Polski w zarysie (A Brief History of Poland), whose controversial thesis that the fall of the state was caused by internal anarchy and institutional weakness revolutionized thinking about the nation’s past by breaking with the Romantic paradigm. The article also discusses the significance of his editorial activity and the influence his works had on the professionalization of historical science in Poland and the establishment of the state as a key analytical category, despite numerous controversies.
