Synopsis

THEATER IN PUBLIC SPACES: STRIKING A BALANCE BETWEEN ARTISTIC FREEDOM AND SOCIAL PRESSURE

Street theater, as a form of performing arts that takes place in public spaces, plays a key role in addressing the social and political challenges of the modern world. This paper analyzes how external pressures influence contemporary street theater practices and artistic freedom, particularly in the context of collectively achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Exploratory research was conducted, focusing on a review of the literature and examples of contemporary artistic initiatives engaged in addressing global issues such as environmental protection, social equality, and education. The significance of street theater as an effective tool supporting the achievement of the SDGs has been demonstrated. At the same time, the necessity of maintaining a balance – and often navigating a delicate equilibrium – between artistic freedom and external pressures, understood as both the influence of public policy and the social environment, has been emphasized.
