Synopsis

ON A PARTICULAR FUNCTION OF SWEAR WORDS IN LANGUAGE

The article analyzes the specific function of profanity in two texts: "The Letter from the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV" and the poem "A Rant Against Jaruzelski." Drawing on the perspectives of cultural linguistics and pragmatics, the author argues that vulgarity in these works is not merely an expression of aggression or an outburst of negative emotions, but also serves a social and integrative function. In these texts, vulgarisms serve as a tool of collective resistance against violence, humiliation, and oppression, as well as a rhetorical device intended to diminish the addressee's status and authority. The analysis shows that linguistic devices associated with taboos  - sexual, scatological, and religious  - intensify the act of insult and play a key role in creating highly emotionally charged messages. The author also emphasizes the cathartic role of linguistic expression and communal laughter, which allows recipients to gain a sense of relief, community, and symbolic regaining of agency in situations of extreme tension and violence.
