MADAME MODJESKA: THE PATRONESS OF THE SKINNER FAMILY

Cornelia Otis Skinner referred to Helena Modjeska as the patroness of her family. Drawing upon Cornelia’s biographical sketch as well as the memoirs of her parents, Otis Skinner and Maud Durbin (who performed in Modjeska’s theatrical company in 1892–1894), the author of this article explores the history of the artistic collaboration and friendship between the young, aspiring actors and the Polish star. Modjeska exerted a profound influence on both their personal lives and artistic development; the couple first met while working in her company and honed their acting craft under her tutelage. In subsequent years, by publishing memoirs and articles about Modjeska and participating in commemorative events in her honor, Mr. and Mrs. Skinner and their daughter became custodians of the great Polish actress’s memory.
