A SIGNIFICANT ABSENCE: ON HELENA MODJESKA’S UNREALISED PERFORMA NCES ON RUSSIAN STAGES
Throughout most of her artistic career, Helena Modjeska received offers to perform in the territory of Imperial Russia proper, primarily in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. These plans, however, never materialized. The aim of this article is to systematize all proposed engagements offered to the actress, identify the initiators of these guest appearances, and analyze the reasons why these projects were utimately abandoned. The Russian projects are contextualized within Modjeska’s broader political activism, particularly concerning the 1895 decree banning her from the Russian Empire. The article also references a letter by Włodzimierz Spasowicz, which provides an analysis of the ban, its consequences, and possible steps that the Chłapowskis could have undertaken to secure its revocation.
