Synopsis

THE IMAGE OF AFRICA IN THE EGO-DOCUMENTS OF ANNA MARLY: FROM THE LEGACY OF RUSSIAN EMIGRATION

This article seeks to interpret the ego-document of Russian émigré Anna Marly within its contextual framework. The paper analyzes the image of Africa reflected in the memoirs Meeting with Africa. Based on the autobiographical notes, the characteristic features of the continent, including its nature, population, life and culture, as well as the specifics of their perception by representatives of the Russian emigration are considered. The analysis aims to identify the semantic structure of the onym “Africa” and the methods of its linguistic representation. The lexical material is extracted from the analysis of all parts of the memoirs included in the book The Road Home: South Africa, Rhodesia, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda-Urundi, Belgian Congo, Angola. All contexts containing direct nominations of African motifs were used as research material. The purpose of this article is a comprehensive study of the image of Africa.
