Synopsis
NARRATIVE STRATEGY OF NOVELISM BY EUGENE VODOLAZKIN
The article focuses on the most prominent works by E. G. Vodolazkin, such as Laurus and The Aviator, but also considers his subsequent novels, which continue the main line of his creative work. The texts are analyzed using innovative literary categories, such as the narrative worldview and narrative ethos. Despite their external differences, Laurus (a genre form of hagiography) and The Aviator (a genre form of diary entries) share a common narrative strategy of life description, presenting themselves to the reader as novels of the conscience. This is their main difference from postmodern intertextuality (despite the abundance of intertextual connections that the writer updates). A kind of “vaccination” of archaic or fictional (detective) narrativity, as well as fantasy and light grotesque, to the trunk of the classical novel strategy reveals the most essential in it: the probabilistic worldview and the narrative ethos of conscience.
