Synopsis

“OH TENNŌ, MY TENNŌ!”: THE MYTHOLOGY OF POP-NATIONALISM IN KOBAYASHI YOSHINORI’S TENNŌRON

The article examines the mythological source material and its interpretation in the work of Yoshinori Kobayashi, an author primarily known for his extensive comics that “theorize” or explain cultural, historical, and social issues. In the analyzed comic Tennōron, Kobayashi extensively draws on mythology to justify, chapter by chapter, the significance of the emperor for Japan’s uniqueness in the global order. The text focuses on two mythological elements: the imperial regalia and the ceremonies of the imperial household, showing how Kobayashi interprets them, which aspects he emphasizes, and which he omits. Due to the lack of studies on Kobayashi’s work in Polish literature, the article serves as an introductory overview.
