THE LEADERS OF THE UNDERGROUND ARMY IN RZESZÓW 1939–1945. GROUP PORTRAIT

The article describes twelve ZWZ-AK officers who commanded the military underground in Rzeszów at the level of sub-district, inspectorate and circuit in the years 1939–1945. Irrespective of when they held the position of commanders, from the autumn of 1939 they were among the first conspirators. They created a solid foundation for a strong underground army in the region. Half of the mentioned twelve leaders paid the highest price for their underground activities. Three of them were killed by the Germans and the other three were executed in 1951 by a communist court. Although Łukasz Ciepliński is the only recognizable one out of the twelve offi cers, they all deserve recognition and commemoration.
