Synopsis

NON OMNIS MORIAR: AN ANALYSIS OF THE PHENOMENON OF MAJOR HENRYK DOBRZAŃSKI “HUBAL”

The article analyzes the fi gure of Major Henryk Dobrzański “Hubal” as a symbol of the enduring ethos of the struggle for Polish independence – from the September Campaign of 1939 to the present day. It presents him both as a soldier and partisan, and as an accomplished athlete representing the pre-war cavalry elite. Particular attention is given to “Hubal’s” legacy in contemporary memory culture: literature, film, visual arts, music, education, and civic and military institutions. The article explores how the legend of “Hubal” contributes to shaping collective identity, patriotic values, and civic attitudes today. It highlights the lasting relevance of the values he embodied – courage, honor, and loyalty to the military oath – and their importance for modern memory politics and the ethos of public service in Poland.
