Synopsis
VARIATIONS, REPETITIONS, ECHOES: THE NOVELS OF THE "SHAKESPEARE PROJECT"
To mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death in 2016, the British publisher Hogarth Press invited well-known writers to collaborate on a project: to create novels inspired by Shakespeare’s works. The following titles were published by Wydawnictwo Dolnośląskie in the "Shakespeare Project" series: "Przepaść czasu" by Jeanette Winterson, "Shylock się nazywam" by Howard Jacobson, "Dziewczyna jak ocet" by Anne Tyler, "Czarci pomiot" by Margaret Atwood, "Ten nowy" by Tracy Chevalier, and "Macbeth" by Jo Nesbø. The author analyzes the six novels, focusing on the adaptation strategies chosen by contemporary writers. She reads the novels of the Shakespeare Project as indicative of the consciousness of Western societies at the beginning of the 21st century. Among the six adaptations, some are more successful than others; some are extraordinary variations that not only reinterpret Shakespearean themes from the perspective of today’s reader but also reformulate the questions posed by the Elizabethan playwright.
