Synopsis
AMBIVALENT NOSTALGIA. BULAT OKUDZHAVA AND YURI TRIFONOV: RHYMES OF LIFE AND WORK
Natalya Ivanova’s article is devoted to Bulat Okudzhava and Yuri Trifonov, well-known writers of the soviet era. They were close to each other by generation — data, place of birth — and social origin (middle of the 20th century, Moscow, party and state elite, repressed by Stalin’s terror). The time placed in their prose and poetry works is the time of late Stalinism, Khrushchev’s thaw (ottepel) and Brezhnev’s Era of Stagnation (zastoy). Both used Aesopian language. They were not dissidents, their works were published most of all in Moscow. Both writers stopped revolutionary romanticism and became antistalinists. Different by style and form, in their literary works they have analyzed Russian and soviet history and personal memory. Trifonov and Okudzhava were close to each other by literary strategy: not emigration, but inner freedom and independence.
