QUANTUM PHENOMENOLOGY OF READING: MIKHAIL SHISHKIN’S NOVEL THE LIGHT AND THE DARK
Bringing together Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and Karen Barad’s agential realism, the essay proposes a quantum-phenomenological reading of Mikhail Shishkin’s 2010 novel The Light and the Dark (Pis’movnik). Through close reading, it identifies four nodes of the novel’s poetics: singularity as a model of an enfolding-unfolding narrative universe; the superposition of the visible and the invisible in bodily experience; entanglement linking dispersed voices, times and objects; and sensory apparatuses of manifestation (smell, touch, gesture), in which the act of perception functions as an agential cut that locally collapses a field of potentialities into a phenomenon of presence. Quantum ontologemes refine the descriptive language of Shishkin’s poetics and make it possible to grasp non-reductively the co-presence of incompatible regimes of time, embodiment, and meaning.
