Synopsis

THE LANGUAGE OF NATURE, THE NATURE OF LANGUAGE: IYA KIVA’S WAR POETRY FROM AN ECOCRITICAL PERSPECTIVE

The article attempts an ecocritical analysis of the war poetry of the Ukrainian author Iia Kyva, focusing, on the one hand, on the bilingualism embedded in her work and, on the other, on the symbolic role of nature. The paper introduces a broad theoretical framework, tracing the evolution of ecocriticism from its “first wave” to contemporary developments, transformations within ecolinguistics, and current issues related to the concept of the Anthropocene. In the analytical section, tools from ecolinguistics and ecopoetics (with particular emphasis on the concept of organic formalism) are applied to interpret Kyva’s poetry. By examining the poet’s biography and her shift from Russian to Ukrainian after the outbreak of the war, the text explores how this linguistic choice relates to themes of identity, land, and the experience of war. The final part presents a case study analysing the poem Олегу Коцареву, focusing on its metrical structure and the metaphorical fabric composed of images of the human being and their relationship with nature.
