Synopsis

BETWEEN A DAYDREAM AND A SINISTER VISION – THE DREAM OF THE HEROINE OF SVETLANA BY VASILY ZHUKOVSKY

The article is devoted to the ballade Svetlana by Vasily Zhukovsky. This is one of three writings in which the poet referred to the motif of Lenore, known thanks to the work of Gottfried August Bürger. In Svetlana, Zhukovsky treated this story differently than in his other texts − the night journey with the beloved takes place in the heroine’s dream. To show the distinctiveness of Svetlana against the background of characters similar to her, the context of other works using this motif was used. An attempt was made to interpret the text in various ways − despite the happy ending of the ballade, Svetlana’s dream can be interpreted as a daydream or a sinister vision, although due to the interpenetration of real and dreamed spaces it is also possible to consider almost the whole story as a figment of the heroine’s imagination.
