Synopsis

PHILOLOGIST’S PENANCE: ON “SEVEN PSALMS…” TRANSLATED BY JACEK IDZI PRZYBYLSKI (1793)

The article is an analysis of the Polish translation of the so-called seven penitential psalms (septem psalmi poenitentiales: Ps. 6; 32 (31); 38 (37); 51 (50); 102 (101); 130 (129); 143 (142), made from the Greek version (Septuagint) by Jacek Idzi Przybylski (1756-1819), professor of antiquity at the Krakow Academy, during his illness in 1793. This translation was published simultaneously with Przybylski’s second poetic biblical translation (Book of Lamentations, Lamentationes Ieremiae). The analysis shows the fidelity of the translation to the original in terms of content and diligence in maintaining the selected formal shape (the use of paired couplets). In order to keep the content of the couplets, the translator expanded the text or shortened it, but always made sure that the additions were logically and stylistically harmonized with the original text, and that the abbreviations did not obscure the meaning. The article is the first analysis of this text – which is an important and successful achievement in the field of Polish translations of the Bible – in the literature on the subject.
