Synopsis

(UN)PLACES Of MEMORY: ON COMMEMORATING UKRAINIAN HOLODOMOR OF 1932-1933

The recent decades have been witnessing the creation of a historic event both on the part of historiographers and in the public discourse. Holodomor of 1932-1933 evolved from a marginal event in the history of the USSR agriculture to a breakthrough in the process of formation of modern Ukrainian nation. The symbolic image of the Great Famine was created by the Ukrainian diaspora, in the times when the topic of the Stalinist genocide was one of the greatest taboos of the Soviet collective memory. It became a legacy recreated with the intention of seeking the historical truth and greater understanding of the nation’s identity.
