Synopsis
REGIONAL IDENTITY IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION (ON THE EXAMPLE OF KUJAWY)
The subject of this article is the cultural identity of the inhabitants of Kujawy (Kuyavia) – a region whose distinctiveness was classified by the researchers as quasi-regionalism, given the fact that transmission of regional tradition in many families has been interrupted. The article presents various activities undertaken by regional leaders and scientists who try to strengthen the inhabitants’ relationship with their regional (little) homeland and encourage them to accommodate the regional symbolic code including customs, patterns of behaviour, and language. The latter component is very important because identity, as a product of the social environment, is constantly being created in the process of communication. Scientific books, addressed to the contemporary inhabitants of Kujawy and encouraging them to learn about the dialect as an intangible heritage of the region, include Słownik gwary i kultury Kujaw (The Dialect and Culture Dictionary of Kujawy), created by a research team of linguists.
