THE FATE OF THE CISTERCIAN MONASTIC CONGREGATION IN PRZEMĘT AT THE TIME OF ERADICATION OF ITS ABBEY IN 1836 AND AFTERWARDS

1836 was crucial for the Cistercian monastic congregation in Przemęt. Although it had survived for five centuries, this Cistercian Abbey was eradicated by the Prussian authorities and the remaining monks were forced to convert from their congregation’s habits to cassocks. This article tries to answer the questions: who were they, what was their fate and how did they handle this new situation? It is worth mentioning that these personal reflections of the friars’ lives are presented along with a historical background of Cistercian monastic congregation in that time.
