Synopsis

THE SERIES OF PRINTS BY HIERONYMUS WIERIX AS AN INSPIRATION FOR REPRESENTATIONS OF THE CHILDHOOD OF JESUS IN FORMER CISTERCIAN CHURCHES COMPARED TO OTHER ORDERS ON THE TERRITORY OF THE EARLY MODERN POLISH-LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH

Interest in the childhood of Christ in the early modern era resulted in interesting iconography showing the hidden life of the Savior. Two series made by Hieronymus Wierix before 1619 became the inspiration for some depictions that were created in monastic circles. One is dedicated to the childhood of Jesus, the other illustrates similar events in the context of the life of the Blessed Virgin. The article is about two paintings from old Cistercian churches in Sulejów and Oliwa. The text presents scenes inspired by Wierix’s engravings, made on the initiative of the Cistercians, in the context of the art of other religious orders – because the engravings from the two aforementioned series were used to create compositions for the Order of Friars Minor (the Observant Branch, known in Poland as Bernardines) in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, as well as for one of the paintings in the altarpiece housed in the Dominican monastery in Kraków.
