Synopsis

TADEUSZ KOWALSKI (18891948) AS THE INITIATOR OF TURKISH DIALECTOLOGY

Tadeusz Kowalski was the founder of Oriental studies in Poland. Although initially interested mainly in Arabic poetry and culture, he gradually shifted his focus primarily to Turkic linguistics, including the Turkish dialects of Anatolia and Rumelia. This article presents his early dialectological expeditions and attempts to explain how and when Kowalski laid the foundations of Turkish dialectology.
