Synopsis
LÜBECK AS A CENTER OF EXPEDITIONS TO PRUSSIA AND LIVONIA IN THE 13TH CENTURY IN THE LIGHT OF SELECTED SOURCES
In the dynamic 13th century for Prussia and Livonia, various political entities began to play an increasingly important role on different levels and wanted to take advantage in their own way of the opportunities for expansion and development that these lands offered. They did so in their own, often specific ways, which expressed their aspirations and plans for Prussia and Livonia. The city of Lübeck should be considered as one of these entities. The aim of this article is to highlight – based on selected diplomatic and narrative sources – the role of Lübeck as one of the main, if not the primary, hubs for expeditions to Prussia and Livonia in the Middle Ages. This topic also provides an opportunity to present the city and its significant role and position within the Baltic region, as well as the related benefits derived from the use of Lübeck by other forces as a sort of logistical center. Due to the concentration of key events and sources related to this subject, primarily from the 13th century, the article will also focus on this period. The work allows for the presentation, analysis, and interpretation of a diverse range of source material. Beginning with narrative sources – chronicles and accounts – and ending with diplomatic sources, which highlight Lübeck’s position and function, as well as directly address logistical issues related to the expeditions. The article will provide an opportunity to examine another aspect of the history of Prussia, Livonia, and Lübeck, and will demonstrate how closely the history of these territories is intertwined with the status and capabilities of the city on the Trave.
