CHINA’S INFLUENCE ON GEORGIA’S ENERGY, ECONOMIC AND MILITARY SECURITY

In recent times, Sino-Georgian cooperation has been on the rise. China appreciates Georgia’s exceptional geographical position and its economic potential, while Georgia sees in China an opportunity to balance the Russian influence. This article uses historical method and critical analysis to delve deeper into this cooperation. The authors note that among bilateral relations, the most significant weight is carried by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which utilizes many existing investments (e.g., Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) in order to create a trade route between China and the European Union. Other issues discussed include the energy sector, controversies related to Chinese investments, and the impact of PRC on Georgia’s security. Analysis of China’s engagement with Georgia reveals significant potential for economic development within the latter. However, these influences are not free from threats, such as hindering Georgia’s cooperation with Western organizations (EU and NATO), espionage, and the quality of executed investments.
