REMARKS ON THE CHAPEL OF BISHOP JAN GROT AT THE CRACOW CATHEDRAL

The paper examines the architecture and function of Bishop Jan Grot’s chapel at Cracow Cathedral, built before 1344 and divided into two separate chapels in the early 16th century. The western part of the original building was rebuilt in the 1520s and later completely transformed in the 18th century. By reinterpreting written sources alongside architectural and archaeological evidence, the study refines the reconstruction of the chapel’s original form as well as its spatial and liturgical program. It argues for the existence of two medieval entrances and discusses the scope of the architectural works carried out in the 1520s – including the replacement of the earlier vault – linked to the expansion of the Wawel Castle gate wing adjacent to the chapel. The paper also reassesses the chapel’s interior decoration and furnishings. Overall, it contributes to a more accurate understanding of the chapel’s medieval and early modern architectural phases.
