Synopsis

THE CONTEMPORARY ETHNODEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION IN THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN

This chapter analyses the current ethnodemographic situation in the Republic of Kazakhstan, reflecting the consequences of historical migrations, Soviet national policy, and demographic processes in the post-Soviet period. The authors examine changes in the ethnic composition of the population, the dynamics of the size of the main ethnic groups, and the characteristics of urbanisation and regional distribution. Particular attention is paid to the influence of state policy on the formation of interethnic harmony, the repatriation of ethnic Kazakhs (Oralmans) and the integration of national minorities. The work also touches upon issues of preserving ethnocultural identity in the context of modernisation and globalisation. The analysis is based on official statistics, population censuses and scientific research.
