Synopsis

KRAKOW OR GNIEZNO – WHERE SHOULD THE KING OF POLAND HAVE BEEN CROWNED IN 1320?

The royal coronations that took place in Gniezno and Krakow between 1295 and 1320 are the source of lively debates in the historiography. The location of the coronation of the Polish king was an intentional choice, and hence there have been various discussions and deliberations on the significance and reasons for choosing this particular location for the entire ceremony. Due to the special fate of the royal crown in the Piast dynasty, historiography has tried to analyse this topic not only in relation to the current context of the years 1295–1320, but to reach deeper into the past to the beginnings of statehood in the Polish lands, when the first three coronations took place in 1025 and 1076. As a result, virtually all the most important issues concerning the condition of Piast rule in the Middle Ages, territorial divisions, and dynastic identity have become the subject of discussion. This article is an attempt to raise and reconsider these issues, although it certainly does not settle these important questions and problems.
