Synopsis

MIKOŁAJ SOKOLNICKI SCANDALOUS PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KRAKOW (D. 1531)

The main figure of this article, Mikołaj Sokolnicki, came to Krakow from Mazovia to study at the university in 1510. After three years of study, he earned his bachelor’s degree, after which he did not continue his studies, but embarked on a journey for several years around the country. In 1518, he returned to study in Krakow, where he earned his master’s degree in the Liberal Arts in 1522. He then continued to study medicine in Krakow and at the same time began lecturing at the Faculty of Arts. Despite not having doctorate in medicine, he had some practical skills and began to treat people, which was strongly opposed by professors in the Faculty of Medicine. Sokolnicki earned a doctorate in medicine in 1527, as one of the first at the University of Krakow. He also became a member of the Faculty of Medicine. He left behind a very interesting diary in which he recorded important events from his life and the university. For several years (1521–1530) he also recorded observations of the weather. The most interesting entries in the diary concern social matters. From 1524 onwards, he recorded the names of Krakow women, his lovers, whom he brought to his place of residence. He died in 1531. His death may have been a consequence of his promiscuity.
