SELECTED MEDIEVAL LINGUISTIC TESTIMONY OF POLISH HISTORY

The article discusses selected medieval linguistic testimony of Polish history, including Slavic tribal names in Polish lands, the paths of Christianization of Poland from the West, and East and related linguistic inspirations, the earliest recorded Polish words (until the end of the 13th century), and the names of the Polish state. The study draws on medieval historical sources and materials collected in dictionary publications: “Słownik staropolski” [“Old Polish Dictionary”], “Słownik staropolskich nazw osobowych” [“Dictionary of Old Polish Personal Names”], “Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku” [“Dictionary of 16th-Century Polish”], as well as historical onomasticons and the sample documentation contained therein.
