MEN’S TEACHERS’ SEMINARY IN STARY SĄCZ (1903–1936): STUDENTS, GRADUATES, AND STAFF

This book is a pioneering monograph of one of the best-known educational institutions in the Sądecki region. It traces the history and operation of the Men’s Teachers’ Seminary (Seminarium Nauczycielskie Męskie) in Stary Sącz from its establishment to its dissolution, addressing both socio-political conditions and the everyday life of the school. Particular attention is devoted to the profiles of pupils and alumni – their social origins, periods of attendance, subsequent professional trajectories, and the roles they played in local communities as teachers, civic activists, and soldiers. Given the breadth of material and the large number of biographical entries, the work has been divided into two volumes. Volume I brings together entries on pupils and alumni – i.e., the school’s own attendees – from A to Ł; Volume II covers M to Ż, and additionally includes school staff and a register of external secondary-school candidates who sat the final examination (matura) at the Men’s Teachers’ Seminary in Stary Sącz without having been enrolled there. The monograph rests on a rich evidentiary base—above all archival records and printed primary sources—supplemented by extensive secondary literature. The publication aligns with current scholarship on the history of education in Poland and constitutes a significant contribution to the study of education in the Sądecczyzna region, within Austro-Hungarian Galicia and the Second Polish Republic.
