Synopsis

DIPLOMACY OF A BREAKTHROUGH. A BREAKTHROUGH IN DIPLOMACY

The book Diplomacy of a Breakthrough. A Breakthrough in Diplomacy offers an analysis of the transformation of Poland’s foreign policy in the years 2015–2025, presenting this period as a shift from a reactive stance to an active role in shaping international relations. The authors—practitioners of diplomacy—draw on their experiences across key directions of Polish foreign policy, including relations with the United States, Israel, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, as well as countries in the region and beyond Europe. A central concept of the volume is credibility as the foundation of effective diplomacy, alongside solidarity, agency, and the capacity to act in times of crisis. The publication highlights Poland’s growing role as an active participant and co-architect of regional and transatlantic policy, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and initiatives such as the Three Seas Initiative and the Bucharest Nine. The book combines practical insight with reflection on the values and constraints of diplomacy, portraying it as a form of public service embedded in political and historical realities.
A distinctive feature of the volume is its multi-perspective approach: nine ambassadors present case studies from different geographical areas, capturing both the specificity of bilateral relations and the universal mechanisms of diplomatic practice. These analyses reveal the tension between national interest and international constraints, as well as the importance of individual diplomatic competence in shaping effective foreign policy.
