Synopsis

THE SANDOMIERZ EPITAPH AND THE CASTELLANS OF KRAKOW IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 13TH CENTURY AND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 14TH CENTURY

In the article, after examining the original, an erroneous reading of the painted epitaph from the sacristy of the Dominican Church of St. James in Sandomierz, dating from the 14th century, was corrected. This source, which provides valuable genealogical information and information about the holders of the most important office in Lesser Poland, the castellany of Krakow, was used in literature on the basis of an incorrect edition, implying erroneous conclusions. This source clearly shows that Sięgniew, who held this office between 1264 and 1268, should be added to the list of Krakow castellans from the 13th century, while at the same time his son Grot, who died in 1313, to whom the epitaph in question was dedicated and who was credited with holding the office of castellan of Krakow between 1310 and 1313, must be removed from it.
