Synopsis
THE ECOLOGICAL DISASTER ON THE ODER RIVER AND THE ACTIVITIES OF THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE LOWER SILESIAN VOIVODESHIP
In 2022 and 2023, an ecological disaster occurred on the Oder River as a result of the proliferation of the golden alga Prymnesium parvum, a species found in various aquatic environments worldwide, particularly in saline waters. Its toxic blooms caused severe damage to river ecosystems. In response, the regional government of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship undertook a range of pro-environmental actions within its competences and available resources. As part of these efforts, research was financed and conducted in cooperation with the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences under frameworks adopted by the voivodeships located along the Oder River in Poland. The studies carried out in 2023-2024 resulted in reports containing recommendations for the protection of the Oder River.
