Synopsis
ON THE DATING AND ORIGIN OF THE MEDIEVAL DUCAL TOMBS IN THE CISTERCIAN ABBEY AT KRZESZÓW: A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE ART OF THE ŚWIDNICA–JAWOR DUCAL COURT
The present study reinterprets the chronology of the ducal tombs of Bolko I and Bolko II in the Cistercian abbey at Krzeszów. It argues that the effigy of Bolko I, until now dated before 1317 and linked to the workshop responsible for the tomb plate of Henryk IV Probus, was in fact carved only in the mid-fourteenth century. This conclusion is based on the striking stylistic differences between the two sculptures and on the fact that Bolko’s effigy is rooted in Wrocław sculpture around 1350. Its imitation of Probus’s figure is shown to result from an intentional programme initiated under Bolko II, reflecting dynastic self-fashioning during his politically weakened rule. The article further reassesses the tomb of Bolko II, situating it within the circle of Parler-related sculpture but rejecting the notion of a single workshop responsible for the Silesian “Parlerian” monuments. On the basis of stylistic analysis and the dating of comparable works, the tomb is placed between 1373 and 1392, during the regency of Duchess Agnes of Habsburg.
