Synopsis
“THE VIEW FROM THE PICTURE” – ON THE FUNCTION AND MEANING OF THE MOTIF IN THE ALTAR FOUNDATIONS OF BISHOP JAN KONARSKI
The motif of “View from the Picture” (discussed in Alfred Neumeyer’s classic study “Der Blick aus dem Bilde”) refers to visual interaction between the person represented in the painting and the viewer outside. It appears on the painted panels of altar donations by the Bishop of Cracow Jan Konarski (1447–1525): the triptych of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (parish church in Bodzentyn and two triptychs depicting life of St. Stanislaus (church of St. Stanislaus in Kobylin and St. Stanislaus chapel in Piotrawin). The motif bearers are portrait depictions of the founder and the actors in historical scenes. In the article I attempt to interpret the meaning and function of the motif in its specific use, both in relation to the external viewer and to the scenic-iconographic whole in which it appears.
