Synopsis

“A PRISON”, “A GRANARY”, “A GARAGE” – A VIRTUE OR A VICE? ON THE PERCEPTION OF MODERNIST ARCHITECTURE IN THE MOUNTAIN HEALTH RESORTS IN THE 1930S

The article is designed to show a social reception of a modernist architectural style in the 1930s, particularly health resorts located in the Polish mountains. It is proposing an overview of arguments for and against the appropriateness of this specific style at the time when vernacular styles, predominantly the Zakopane architectural style, were gaining widespread popularity in such type of architecture. The main question put forward in those days was: should the compositional harmony be based on the matching principle rooted in local architectural tradition, or on the contrary – the juxtaposition of white, smooth cubes with flat roofs, with a flowing outline of green peaks in the background? The interpretation of the modernist architecture in its relationship to the surrounding mountains and rural landscape is another undertaken topic. In case of mineral spas resorts, the article examines the ideas and symbols expressed by the new style: as means of self-presentation, it was used to raise the attractiveness of the guesthouses, promising comfort, elitism, and prestige.
