The Factory: A Monograph of the C. Warhanek Enterprise in Mszana Dolna (1890–1948)
This monograph presents the first comprehensive study of the C. Warhanek enterprise in Mszana Dolna (1890–1948)—the most significant industrial plant in the town prior to World War II and, alongside the refinery in Sowliny, one of the two largest in the Limanowa district. It provides a detailed analysis of a relatively large industrial enterprise operating in what was, at the end of the 19th century, a peripheral, mountainous center of an agricultural character. Through the investment of foreign (Czech-Austrian) capital, the factory became a primary driver of local modernization and urbanization.
The plant functioned as an integrated industrial complex comprising a steam sawmill, a cooperage (barrel factory), a fish cannery, and, from 1943, a vinegar works. Drawing on extensive multi-archival research (including the National Archives in Kraków, the Archives of Modern Records, foreign sources, contemporary press, and oral accounts), the author reconstructs the chronology of the establishment and expansion of the firm, its ownership structure, production organization, finances, machinery, labor conditions, and the process of nationalization in 1945–1948.
This work is situated within the fields of microhistory and economic history, treating the plant as a case study of “island capitalism” (kapitalizm wyspowy, per Witold Kula). Particular attention is paid to the enterprise’s role as an urbanizing force—ranging from demographic growth and the curbing of economic emigration to the multiplier effect (the development of trade, services, and infrastructure) and the solidification of an industrial identity in local urbanonymy (e.g., ulica Fabryczna, meaning Factory Street). A key theme is the socio-political activity and acculturation of the Dubowy family, who served as village mayors (wójtowie), engaged in educational and charitable patronage, and helped shape the local elite.
This monograph fills a significant gap in the study of corporate histories in Galicia and the Second Polish Republic, highlighting the role of industry as a modernizing agent and a vehicle for local memory and heritage.
