Synopsis

BETWEEN THE LIBRARY AND THE CLASSROOM: CREATIVE ENCOUNTERS WITH LITERATURE

This article analyzes the challenges of contemporary Polish language and literature education in the context of students’ growing reluctance to read assigned books, which is frequently perceived as a burden. The author highlights the need for a paradigm shift—moving away from a model predicated on control and conforming to standardized answers, toward creative encounters with the text that engage emotions, the senses, and physical movement. Drawing on the principles of neurodidactics, the paper argues that the brain best assimilates information that is experiential and embedded within a social or personal context. The publication outlines a range of practical, active learning methods. These include dressing up as literary characters, organizing mock trials of protagonists, utilizing games (e.g., Dixit, Story Cubes), and incorporating modern technologies (such as VR and mobile applications). A crucial role in this process is played by the teacher and the librarian acting as cultural facilitators, who transition from being mere examiners to becoming guides in the realm of values and meanings. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the importance of making classic literature relevant for our times by juxtaposing it with contemporary issues, such as consumerism or armed conflicts. The ultimate objective of these interventions is to cultivate an enduring, intrinsic motivation to read books, founded on a sense of purpose and pleasure rather than academic coercion.
