OUR FAVORITES IN AMERICA: HELENA MODJESKA AND JAN MATEJKO

This article examines the roles of Modjeska and Matejko as representatives of Polish artists at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Helena Modjeska (1840–1909) was the most outstanding Polish stage actress of the 19th century, famous for her Shakespearean and tragic roles. She was a patriot and advocate for women’s education. She began her career in Galicia, continued in Warsaw, and then in the United States. Jan Matejko (1838–1893) became the preeminent Polish historical painter and simultaneously influenced the shaping of the nation’s historical imagination. In addition to his celebrated artistic output, Matejko served as the director of the Kraków School of Fine Arts, and collector.
