Synopsis

THE NAME OF BORIS PASTERNAK IN 20TH-CENTURY RUSSIAN POETIC REFLECTION

The article is devoted to an overview of poetic works from the twentieth century that mention Boris Pasternak’s name. The subject of study represents the artistic image of poet-Pasternak through the lens of historical dynamics — reflecting on his contemporaries’, disciples’, and followers’ perception of him. It examines the subjective distance between the author of a poem, lyrical hero, and the image of Pasternak, which sets the emotional tone of the poem by establishing either vertical relationships (the timeless significance of the poet’s figure and its inclusion in literary canon) or horizontal ones (ironic mode, competitive mode, etc.). The image of poet-Pasternak primarily emerges based on characteristics of his creative style and thematic range found in his poetry collections, reflecting his naturalistic thinking, unity with the world, and connection with other people. Notably, the image of Pasternak was particularly relevant during Khrushchev thaw, embodying one example of resistance against authority and asserting the value of freedom in artistry. References to Pasternak’s name throughout Russian poetry of the twentieth century underscore the “universality” of the poet’s identity, engaging both traditionalists and experimental artists in dialogue with him.
