Synopsis

“LITERATURE ON THE GRILL”: CULINARY-LITERARY TERMINOLOGY IN SOROKIN’S MANARAGA — SOME REMARKS ON LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION

The article examines Vladimir Sorokin’s novel Manaraga, focusing on its distinctive culinary-literary lexicon and the hybridisation of discourses. Sorokin depicts a dystopian world in which the printed book loses its communicative function and becomes exclusive fuel for the gastronomic ritual book’n’grill. Literature is radically materialised: its value depends not on meaning, but on paper quality, binding, and “burning performance”. Sorokin fuses the languages of gastronomy, bookbinding, technology, and marketing, creating a post-print sociolect of “book’n’grillers”. Neologisms, pseudo-Anglicisms, and semantic shifts—such as redefining to read as “to burn skillfully”— form the core of the novel’s aesthetics. The article also discusses challenges faced by the Polish translator, particularly in rendering materiality and addressing register clashes. Manaraga portrays not the death of language but its transformation: through hybrids and deformations, language reveals a culture that simultaneously consumes and produces its own texts.
