Zdolności narracyjne osób dorosłych z diagnozą schizofrenii: Badania kohezji i koherencji
Synopsis
NARRATIVE ABILITIES IN ADULTS DIAGNOSED WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA: A STUDY OF COHESION AND COHERENCE
This monograph presents an interdisciplinary study of the consistency of narratives produced by individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia with no schizophasia, integrating linguistic analysis tools with a neuro-speech therapy perspective and research fndings from the feld of psychiatry. The aim of the study was to assess the cohesion and coherence of utterances produced by adults with schizophrenia and to compare them with the narratives of healthy individuals. The research data were collected during sessions in which participants narrated picture-based stories and created self-narratives about their own experiences. The recorded utterances were transcribed and then analysed for cohesion indicators, including grammatical and lexical devices, as well as local and global coherence, understood as the degree of logical organisation of the narrative content. The consistency coefcients were calculated using the SALT (Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts) sofware, which can be considered innovative in the context of Polish-language research into the language of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The book consists of four chapters. The frst two establish the theoretical framework detailing the biological determinants of speech and the ability to communicate, linguistic concepts centred on speech and language, and content relating to discourse, narrative and the coherence of utterances. The second part of the monograph describes the study’s methodology, the course of the research conducted by the author, and its fndings, culminating in the fnal conclusions.
The study confrmed the previously proposed research hypothesis: speech consistency in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, excluding those exhibiting schizo phasia, was expected to be lower than that of individuals without a psychiatric diagnosis. Reduced speech consistency was observed in patients across measures of cohesion as well as local and global coherence. A correlation was also demonstrated between lower local and global coherence and higher levels of positive symptoms as measured by the PANSS. The results of the analyses indicate a preliminary trend and underscore the value of continuing research utilising the methodological framework and analytical tools presented here.
